Project description
From September 1, 2017, the Leiden University Institute for History will be appointing a PhD for a four-year period, within the NWO financed project Resilient Diversity: The Governance of Racial and Religious Plurality in the Dutch Empire, 1600-1800.The Early Modern Dutch Empire was characterized by diversity. This project looks into how diversity was governed in the Dutch Empire in the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. At the same time, it looks for the reasons for the resilience of institutions of diversity governance and its impact in Early Modern and contemporary society.

The candidate to this PhD position will be responsible for the development of the subproject Regulating Relations: Controlling Sex and Marriage. This subproject answers the question to how did Dutch colonial institutions control sexual behavior and intimate relationships and how did they shape relationships across cultural divides? The candidate will be directly supervised by prof. Cátia Antunes and co-supervised by dr. Karwan Fatah-Black.

This project is a joint endeavor between the Institute for History, Leiden University, and the International Institute of Social History (IISG-Amsterdam).The candidate will work within a team of four senior researchers (at Leiden prof Cátia Antunes, and dr Karwan Fatah Black, and at the IISG prof Ulbe Bosma and dr Matthias van Rossum), two postdoctoral fellows and two PhD candidates. Key responsibilities

  • Writing a dissertation in Dutch or English within four years;
  • Submitting research results for publication to international peer-reviewed academic journals;
  • Attending and actively participating in all the team meetings;
  • Jointly contribute to the team’s database (as a research tool for the whole project);
  • Presenting papers at conferences and workshops;
  • Co-organizing conferences and workshops;
  • Teaching some undergraduate courses in the second and third year of appointment
  • Participating in PhD training courses (within the frame of the N. W. Posthumus Institute).

Functie-eisen

  • (Research) MA degree in History (or a discipline closely connected with the theme of the PhD project);
  • Written and oral fluency in Dutch and English;
  • Demonstrable interest for research premises of the project;
  • Willingness to work within a team and an international academic community that aspires to scholarly excellence;
  • A problem-focused approach to research and demonstrable ability to apply theoretical and comparative frameworks;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The PhD position is for a period of four years (full time or 0.8 fte for a period of five years). Initially the employee will receive a one year contract. An extension of three years is possible having received positive evaluations of capabilities and achievements.
Remuneration for a full-time working week will be € 2,191.- gross per calendar month in the first year, increasing to € 2,801.- gross per calendar month in the fourth year. 

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
