Faculty of Humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies is looking for a Postdoctoral Researchers, Leiden Global Interactions (2 or 3 positions 0.6 fte).

Job description

We are seeking to develop emerging talent by providing a short-term (6-12 months) postdoc position. During this time, the postdoc will dedicate his/her time to developing and writing a Dutch National (NWO), EU (ERC) or similar grant proposal.

We will consider only the most competitive proposals within the humanities (area studies, history, linguistics, art history, literary studies, cultural studies, ancient languages and cultures), archaeology, or cultural anthropology. The proposal must demonstrate an innovative, preferably cross-disciplinary approach (theoretical, methodological or both) and advance the study of a topic concerning global interactions. Ideally, the proposed research should complement existing research at Leiden. A condition of the postdoc is that if a grant application is successful, the candidate will agree to be based at Leiden (pending agreement with the relevant institute and faculty).

Projects will be evaluated in terms of the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the Global Interactions research themes;
  • Fit with existing Leiden research;
  • Inter- or multi-disciplinary promise in problem statement and methodology;
  • Scientific quality and innovative character.

Expected results:

  •  Submission of a NWO or ERC grant application directly following the postdoc end-date;
  • One refereed publication;
  • Participation in a work-in-progress seminar for the wider Leiden University community.

LGI postdocs are required to present their ongoing work in a seminar series in the 2018 academic year. Postdocs will give a brief update of their progress and outline concrete conceptual and methodological issues that are part of their proposed projects. A senior researcher will then comment upon their work and other members of the academic community will be invited to give feedback and raise points of discussion. This exercise should be treated as a way to receive valuable feedback, while also honing presentation skills. In order to participate in a session, postdocs must have a substantial draft of their grant application ready to be circulated to the senior researcher/discussant for their session. The details of dates and times of seminars will be determined in September 2017.

Faculty of Humanities

Leiden Global Interactions (LGI) is a university research profile that involves the Faculties of the Humanities, Archaeology and Social Sciences at Leiden University. A central idea that unites the diverse research within this initiative is a shift away from a classical Weberian approach that views historical development (and modernization) as emanating from Europe and ‘the West’ to a truly global approach allowing for multiple perspectives in a multipolar world. This de-centering approach remains central to our mission in promoting innovative research on past, present, and emergent global forms and interconnections.
