The Faculty of Science and Institute of Environmental Sciences is looking for a PhD candidate, Impacts of nanomaterials on microbiome and host interactions (1.0 FTE).

Job description

Te Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) is  searching for a PhD-candidate who will be working on the ecotoxicological tools to assist nanosafety assessment. This PhD-project fits within the HORIZON 2020 project “Patrols” aiming to deliver a battery of innovative, next generation physiologically anchored, hazard assessment tools that more accurately predict adverse effects caused by long term (chronic), low dose exposure to nanomaterials in human and environmental systems to support regulatory risk decision making.

Key tasks:

  • develop a method to determine the sub-lethal responses of a variety of nanomaterials to the microbiome and its host (in this case daphnids and zebrafish larvae);
  • obtain mechanistic understanding of the type of effects;
  • compare our results with the results obtained by the scientific partners within PATROLS who use 3D gut systems;
  • extrapolate these results to develop in silico models suited for risk assessment.
