For the MSc International Relations and Diplomacy Programme (MIRD) the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, of the Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, is looking for a Tutor/Lecturer in International Relations (1.0 FTE).

Job description

The MIRD programme seeks to support its academic teaching staff by the appointment of a full-time tutor in International Relations. The two-year MIRD programme offers a unique blend of academic education in international relations and political science with practical graduate education and training in international negotiation and diplomacy. It is offered jointly by Leiden University‘s Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Institute of Political Science and the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’. The programme is administered and managed by the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (Institute of Security and Global Affairs).

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • provide assistance to the course lecturers in the MSc International Relations and Diplomacy (for more information on the individual courses, see the e-prospectus at https://studiegids.leidenuniv.nl/en/studies/show/6133/international_relations_and_diplomacy_political_science#tab2 );
  • have relevant background knowledge in areas such as quantitative and qualitative research methods, conflict resolution, international organisation and diplomacy;
  • have an excellent command of English;
  • assume a primary role in the assessment of students, and to provide relevant feedback;
  • monitor and enhance students’ progress;
  • attend all lectures of the courses for which he or she assists;
  • participate in meetings with the MIRD programme director and the programme coordinator;
  • attend and participate in mandatory trainings and meetings;
  • take on administration tasks (such as participating in and supporting committees related to the MIRD programme);

  • PhD degree in Political Science, International Relations or a related academic area;
  • demonstrable commitment and capacity to assist in the provision of high-quality teaching and student assessment;
  • capacity to meet strict deadlines;
  • demonstrable interest in and capacity to judge students’ work and to provide students with relevant feedback;
  • self-motivated and engaged work attitude;
  • capacity to work in a team setting;

Conditions of employment

The position is initially for six months, starting preferably on the 1st October 2017, with the possibility of renewal depending on budgetary circumstances and performance. The salary range is €2,588 to €4,084 gross per month depending on experience (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities).
