In the context of a research team consisting of 3 PhDs, two post-docs and a research assistant we will work towards a multilevel and multi-sited ethnographic comparison. Within this project, it is the responsibility of the PhD candidate to do research in respectively Gdansk in Poland, Rotterdam in the Netherlands or Turin in Italy. Through prolonged ethnographic fieldwork, you will work at three case studies and map out the context for collective food procurement. In order to contribute to the online interactive platform, you will receive an intensive training in audio-visual media (expected during the second year of PhD).

Deliverables for all the three positions:

• Elaborating a research proposal, conducting fieldwork (total 15 months) and writing a PhD thesis; publishing one journal article and one book chapter;
• Submitting research papers and presenting reports at the project’s workshops and at the project’s final conference;
• Actively contributing to the project’s summer school;
• Providing footage and edits for the online interactive platform and for pitching the case studies;
• Organising one's case study according to a research protocol and data management plan, in coordination with the rest of the research group;
• Organising and participating in reading and discussion groups, seminars, workshops, and masterclasses (as appropriate) within the research group and the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.

• A Research Masters or Masters degree in Cultural Anthropology or related field, with a top quality Masters thesis;
• Well-developed research skills, including the ability to formulate relevant and creative research questions and hypotheses, descriptive and analytical skills, and a clear and persuasive style of writing.
• Experience with ethnographic research and the extended case study method;
• Excellent mastery of English (spoken and academic writing);
• Independent thinker and team player;
• Determined and motivated to complete the proposed PhD research within 4 years;
• Experience in digital and visual media is preferred;
• Experience with data management plans is preferred;
• For the case study in Poland the PhD candidate must have a native or near native competence in Polish;
• For the case study in the Netherlands the PhD candidate must have a native or near native competence in Dutch;
• For the case study in Italy the PhD candidate must have a native or near native competence in Italian.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

We offer a one year position starting from 1 February 2018. The appointment may be extended for up to a total of four years, subject to need and satisfactory performance. Salary range from € 2,222.- to € 2,840.- gross per month based on a full-time appointment (pay scale P, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
