The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Centre for Linguistics has (starting 1 February 2018) a vacancy for a University Lectureship in English Language (1,0 FTE).

Job description

  • Contributing primarily to the BA English language programme in English Language Acquisition (Taalvaardigheid) by teaching elementary and more advanced courses on topics like vocabulary building, pronunciation (language lab), developing academic writing and presentation skills, practical grammar and language use, and (optionally) translation skills (English to Dutch and vice versa);
  • Supervision of (primarily) a fair number of BA theses within the BA programme English Language and Culture and (should the occasion arise) within the MA Linguistics tracks English Language and Linguistics and (optionally) Translation in Theory and Practice (Dutch/English); occasional supervision of PhD theses in the successful candidate’s particular expertise areas within LUCL may also be required;
  • Doing research in the area or areas described, preferably within LUCL’s research group “Language Use in Past and Present”;
  • Contribution to administrative duties within the BA programme English Language and Culture as well as within LUCL as a whole.

Requirements

  • A PhD in a relevant area of English Language, Linguistics or Language Acquisition as outlined above;
  • The ability to teach (particularly) BA courses within the field outlined above, and to contribute to occasional revision of courses in this area should this be desirable, all in close cooperation with colleagues in the English BA programme and LUCL;
  • Applicants are expected to have skills that are relevant for teaching in the BA English programme comprising the teaching of academic writing, practical English grammar and vocabulary skills, pronunciation courses in the language laboratory, presentation skills and rhetoric, as well as (optionally) translation from Dutch to English and English to Dutch;
  • Excellent research qualities, as demonstrated in a PhD degree on a relevant topic in the area outlined above (candidates nearing completion of a PhD may also be considered); research experience; and an international publication record, as measured against relative seniority and previous job experience;
  • Proven didactic qualities (teaching evaluations);
  • Administrative abilities, as measured against relative seniority and previous job experience;
  • If the successful applicant is a native speaker of Dutch or English (or any other language), they will be expected to have a near-native-speaker level of competence in the other language (i.e. equivalent to a C2 qualification in English or Dutch in the Common European Framework of Reference); applicants who do not fulfil these requirements will not be considered;
  • Non-native speakers of Dutch are expected to speak Dutch fluently within two years after their appointment.

Conditions of employment

We offer a two year term position. Depending upon performance, this position may lead to a permanent appointment thereafter. Salary range, depending on education and work experience, from €3,475 to €4,757 gross per month based on a fulltime appointment (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Depending on qualifications the lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until he/she fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience.

Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden’s historic city centre and in modern buildings in The Hague. 

The Faculty has seven Institutes, among which the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (www.lucl.nl). LUCL has a longstanding tradition in the teaching of and research into the world’s languages and features unique linguistic expertise. Current theoretical insights are combined with modern experimental methods in its research profile area ‘Language Diversity in the World’. The successful candidate will closely collaborate with other members of LUCL working in their field of expertise and especially with the members of the English department’s Language Acquisition Section.
