The Institute of Security and Global Affairs is looking for an Assistant Professor (1.0 FTE).

Job description

The Institute seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an assistant professor with teaching and research expertise in crisis, safety and security studies. The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Develop and teach courses in terrorism and political violence;
  • Conduct independent research and support the further and ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of the Institute;
  • Supervision of thesis and capstone projects;
  • Tutor students by providing mentoring and advice;
  • Acquire and manage research and training projects from third-party sources.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Political Science, Criminology, Psychology, International Relations, Sociology, History, Public Administration or another field with direct relevance for the study of terrorism and political violence.
  • Affinity with the legal aspects of preventing and countering terrorism.
  • Demonstrable research in the field of terrorism and political violence; outstanding research qualities manifest in an established or developing publication record.
  • Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching.
  • Demonstrable passion for education, in and out of the classroom (experience with blended learning technologies is a plus)
  • Demonstrable commitment to a close-knit, interdisciplinary academic community.
  • Excellent command of English.
  • Excellent network in the world of professionals in the field of security and global affairs, counter-terrorism and /or safety and justice
  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.
Salary range from €3,545 to €4,852 gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact.
Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies. The approach to issues of security is glocal, that is to say that the local, national, transnational and global impact are studied and analysed in conjunction with each other.
