Global challenges are complex and transboundary in nature requiring a truly multidisciplinary approach, understanding and addressing governance challenges to respond to transboundary risks. The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of Leiden University analyses and studies these issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact.

Operating from The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice, ISGA has established a strong nationally and internationally prominent profile in security, counter-terrorism, and cyber security; both in education and policy relevant research. Since its establishment in 2016, the Institute has undergone rapid growth, and is seeking to appoint a Chair in Security and Scientific Director who can build further on this successful start, in a period dedicated to finding the middle ground between rapid growth and consolidation. The Scientific Director will provide academic leadership to the Institute as well as lead on research and contribute to education. The Chair and Scientific Director will join a young, dynamic and collaborative environment and will contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere

ISGA’s intensive recent development in both education and research requires commitment and professionalism from its entire staff, but also inspired and insightful leadership. The Scientific Director provides leadership building on the existing foundations. The Scientific Director is responsible for coordination and cooperation with the Faculty Board in day-to-day management tasks, but also in further developing the FGGA strategy and working towards its strategic goals. S/he is expected to create an environment supportive of the professional growth of young researchers.

The Chair in Security is expected to shape and lead research in the security domain, with a particular focus on one of the six ISGA’s profile areas: Cyber Security and Governance; Diplomacy and Global Affairs; Governance of Crises; Intelligence and Security; Physical Violence and Public Order; or Terrorism and Political Violence. The Chair will play a leading role in developing the research group in close collaboration with ISGA staff members and other Professors. The Chair is expected to contribute to the development and dissemination of the academic output of the research group and wider Institute. The Chair is expected to contribute to the development and consolidation of teaching programmes and teach in one or more of the educational programs at Bachelor’s, Master’s or Executive level.

• A PhD;
• A proven track record in the field of security studies, preferably in one of the profile areas of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs;
• Excellent interdisciplinary research portfolio in the security domain, apparent from international scientific and policy relevant publications and research projects, and successful grant applications;
• International visibility and reputation in the security domain;
• Didactic qualities in order to be able to provide, develop and organize education at BSc, MSc and Executive level, and a clear vision on scientific education;
• Proven ability to successfully supervise doctoral candidates to completion;
• Excellent communication skills and a team player, passionate about academic innovation in a young and dynamic working environment;
• Proven experience and qualities in managerial and administrative tasks in a university organization and/or in national or international scientific organizations;
• Ability to maintain excellent relations with the Faculty and wider University, and the external field, and further build these relations in the coming years.

The gross salary levels will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, we offer an excellent pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions.
