The Executive Board of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is searching for professor in Population Health to add scientific evidence and output to the new LUMC societal outreach profile Population Health.

Job description

As a result of globalization, social and scientific developments new questions arise with regard to population health. Despite the fact that the public health in the Netherlands is in ‘good shape’, there is still room for improvement. How do we improve individual care and support so that this contributes to a healthier population with less care and costs as a result? The main reason for setting up this new chair.

The chair will be established in the department of Public Health and Primary Care (PHPC) and in the LUMC Campus The Hague (LCDH), which is focusing on Population Health Management with a portfolio of educational and scientific programs. The professor of Population Health will be part of the team of professors cooperating within the department of PHPC and the LCDH and will work in close collaboration with the departments of Clinical Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science. You will define and ensure the consistency within the research programs, guide the acquisition of research grants and you will play a role in the supervision of PhD students and Bachelor and Master students.

Requirements

The new Professor in the field of Population Health preferably should be an MD PhD or an MSc MPH licensed physician with SMBWO or a similar foreign accreditation as population epidemiologist. Primary field of experience and output should be population epidemiology. You are an experienced senior researcher with a high standard output in current registers. A wide expertise in quantitative research, including handling large, linked databases from various sources, and in multidisciplinary domains (social sciences, biostatistics, big data informatics scientists) will be needed. The new Professor should also be an experienced teacher with the necessary educational qualifications and skills, such as a University Teaching Qualification certificate (BKO – Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: for a period of five years with a view to permanent employment.

You are working in full-time employment and the salary is according the collective agreement for  University Hospitals (CAO UMC). If you are a new employee, you will receive an initial appointment for a period of five years with a view to permanent employment.

The terms of employment offered by the LUMC are highly favourable. For example, you will receive an 8% holiday remuneration, a year-end bonus, a pension arrangement with the National Civil Pension Fund, and, if applicable, a bonus for unsocial hours. Department

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care hosts four disciplines (General Practice, Elderly Care Medicine, Public Health and Medical Anthropology) and two large regional specialist training schools (General Practice and Elderly Care Medicine). The department develops societal outreach on behalf of the LUMC in the Hague region by developing the branch Population Health Management on the LUMC Campus The Hague, that unites all department disciplines with the regional hospitals and community-, primary- and mental health institutions in the area. The department is heavily involved in the Bachelor and Master programs of the LUMC medical curriculum, and develops and organizes the new two-year interdisciplinary modular Master program Population Health Management (educating master students with various bachelor backgrounds as well as PhD students, specialists in training and professionals/executives) in the LUMC Campus The Hague.

The department has 7 professors and 170 employees of whom currently 30 (also) work in The Hague. There are two research programs: Geriatrics in Primary Care (GPC) and Prevention, Population health - and Disease management (PrePoD), with as focus areas palliative care, geriatric rehabilitation, vulnerable community dwelling elderly (GPC), respectively syndemics, youth mental health care, eHealth and population health management (PrePoD). Both programs host 20-25 PhD fellows with various backgrounds in mainly externally funded projects, that are successful and produce strong publications. The professor of Population Health will be one of the principal investigators in the PrePoD program, and will also be involved in GPC research.
