Functiebeschrijving

Currently most Open Education solutions lack a long-term engagement and sustainability: Many learners are joining MOOCs and online communities but are losing motivation and interest as they are not finalising the courses or becoming inactive. This PhD research project is aimed to develop and assess quality indicators and evaluate their significance and usability. For this purpose, an alternative approach to the design and delivery of Open Education solutions is developed in the research that focuses the long-term engagement of learners in Open Education and that takes into account motivation, intentions and strategy of both parties: the open education designers and providers and the learners themselves.
This PhD research project will combine and use different important theories in the fields of open education, constructivism, systems theory, critical pedagogy, competence building, quality and organization development. The research will use learning analytics, questionnaires and structured interviews for gathering the data. Statistical methods will include structural equation modelling and design of experiments techniques.
The PhD candidate will be passionate about open education and will strive for developing the project in a self-organized manner supported by a daily supervisor and a professor. S/he will publish results of the research in high-impact scientific journals and will present intermediate results in international, peer-reviewed conferences. The candidate will actively contribute to the dissemination and application activities in European research projects and s/he will collaborate with other researchers in the research cluster on open education and innovation.

Functie-eisen

  • Master or equivalent advanced degree in a field relevant to Open Education and the topic of the PhD project (e.g., educational sciences, learning sciences, psychology, social sciences)

  • Analytical, creative and innovative approach to solving problems
  • (Basic) knowledge in (multivariate) statistics

Open Universiteit

Studying online anywhere in the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders)
The Open Universiteit (OU) is the university where students study online. Students of the OU combine their study with other activities, usually a job. Characteristics of the education are openness, flexibility and quality. Students can follow bachelor and master degree programmes in seven fields of study. More than 17.000 students are studying at the OU and the OU has 650 employees. The OU has a network of sixteen regional study centres in the Netherlands and six in Belgium (Flanders). The headoffice is situated in Heerlen.
The most modern technologies and educational insights are applied in bachelor and master programmes and courses and also in projects and programmes with partners.
Nationally and internationally the OU plays a key role in the innovation of higher education. Education and research are closely interrelated which guarantees that the current state of science is applied. The OU not only invests in research in the various academic disciplines, but also in research in learning sciences and learning technologies which contributes to the innovation of higher education.

Satisfied students and employees
For five years in a row the OU has the highest score of all Dutch universities in the National Student Survey: students of the OU are most satisfied about their study compared to students of the other thirteen universities. The Open Universiteit  and the programmes are also highly valued in the Dutch university guides ’Keuzegidsen’: best university 2015 with 4 top bachelor and 2 top master programmes 2015. Moreover, in the ranking list of best companies to work for (category 500 and more employees, for young employees until 35 years) the OU ranks second. The Monitor@work index shows that younger employees are positive about the excellent resources of the OU: variety and variation in work, autonomy in work, learning possibilities and a positive work atmosphere
