We offer one PhD position (AIO) in the area of protohistoric archaeology. The project, with the working title “Early and Late Medieval import ceramics in Fryslân and Groningen (400-1150 AD)” aims to produce more insight into the international network of the terp-mound dwellers in the area by means of ceramic analysis. An important secondary goal is to obtain more information on the value of these sites from the perspective of archaeological heritage management. The project aims to better understand the Early Medieval Frisian occupation of the area in relation to their Carolingian, Anglosaxon and Scandinavian neighbours.
The project also aims to gain more insight in the use of field walking as a method to study the spatial patterns of surface material. To this end several campaigns will need to be organized and supervised. The fieldwork will be a collaboration with students, amateurs and local inhabitants. It will include an open day for the general public.
As a PhD candidate, you should be committed to conducting independent and original scientific research, to report on this research in international peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and disseminating knowledge in non-academic contexts. The result should be a cumulative PhD.

We are looking for talented and ambitious researchers in the relevant discipline. Your qualifications are:
- a master's degree in archaeology, or a related field, with an excellent academic record
- proven research abilities and affinity with the research topic
- excellent command of English and good academic writing skills
- command of Dutch is recommended.

Fixed-term contract: 48.

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,222 gross per month in the first year to € 2,840 gross per month in the fourth year (figures based on full employment, salary scales CAO Dutch Universities). On top of the annual salaries, we provide an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus, both as a percentage of the gross annual salary.

The 1.0 fte appointment is temporary for a specified period of four years. The candidate will first be appointed for 18 months. After twelve months, an assessment will take place of the candidate's results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.
