Functiebeschrijving

We seek an outstanding, independent, highly motivated researcher to work on the NWO VIDI project ’On the edge: theory and techniques at the frontiers of edge-colouring’, under the guidance of Dr Ross Kang. The project is in the area of probabilistic and extremal combinatorics. The goal is to develop and apply novel methods in the context of edge-colourings of graphs. The research has links with the theory of communication networks, random graphs and algorithms.
The position is supported by a generous travel allowance as you will be encouraged to attend and contribute to international scientific meetings.
You will have a light teaching load, and you may perform your teaching duties in English, if necessary.

Functie-eisen

You should hold (or have nearly completed) a PhD in Mathematics or a related discipline. Expertise in one or more of the following topics will be advantageous: probabilistic methods in combinatorics, extremal graph theory, graph colouring, structural graph theory, or random graphs. We do, however, place higher priority on mathematical talent and originality. Proficiency in English is a requirement.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

you will be classified as a Postdoctoral Researcher 4 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
The Faculty of Science is an equal opportunity employer, committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, and as such encourages applications from women and minorities.

The VIDI project is embedded in the Applied Stochastics group of the Department of Mathematics at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands). This group is led by Prof. Eric Cator; other members include Dr Henk Don and three PhD candidates, two of whom are co-supervised by Dr Kang on related topics. We hope to recruit another PhD candidate for this project soon.
The Department of Mathematics is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP), and has a friendly and open atmosphere. This year, for the third time in the past five years, our mathematics programme earned the highest undergraduate student ratings nationwide.
Nijmegen was founded by the Romans and claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands. It is a pleasant city surrounded by lush green countryside, and has convenient and efficient transport links to larger cities such as Utrecht, Eindhoven, and Amsterdam (the last two have airports).
