As an assistant professor of computational and theoretical physics you will address either the quantum theory of real materials or statistical physics of complex systems. Examples are computational physics of quantum matter, strongly correlated systems, soft matter, and biologically relevant physics. We will encourage you to look for opportunities to add valuable novel aspects to the TCM group’s research programme but at the same time be coherent with it. You are expected to enthusiastically adopt a leading role in the development and teaching of modern and inspiring courses in physics, specifically within condensed matter theory and statistical and computational physics.

- an excellent track record in theoretical and/or computational physics, as demonstrated by publications and presentations at international conferences;
- excellent teaching skills to participate in the faculty’s educational programmes, particularly in the computational physics component;
- the ability to attract sufficient funding for your line of research.

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

you will initially be appointed as an Assistant Professor, Level 2 (salary scale 11). If your performance is evaluated positively at the end of your tenure track, you will be offered a permanent position as an Assistant Professor, Level 1 (salary scale 12) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)

Faculty of Science

The Institute for Molecules and Materials is an interdisciplinary research institute in chemistry and physics at Radboud University. Its mission is to perform fundamental research at the highest international standards to understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials and to educate and train the next generation of leaders in science and entrepreneurship. The IMM actively explores and promotes interaction with industry and application of its fundamental research.

The IMM distinguishes itself from similar institutes by intense collaborations and interactions between chemists and physicists and/or experimentalists and theorists, and the very strong infrastructure that includes large user facilities such as the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML) and the Free Electron Laser facility FELIX.

The Theory of Condensed Matter department (TCM, part of the IMM) is headed by Prof. M. (Mikhail) Katsnelson. Research in this group focuses on the theory of structural and electronic properties of condensed matter. Currently, our two main lines of research are:
(1) Graphene and other two-dimensional materials
(2) Strongly correlated systems and magnetism

The group’s activities are meant to support and stimulate experimental investigations relevant for materials science and technology. The educational programmes of the educational institute of Physics & Astronomy are closely linked with the research conducted at the IMM. The strong connection between education and research offers a means to attract and retain talented Master’s students for PhD projects by giving them the opportunity to actively shape their PhD projects.
