Job description
Research suggests an overall pattern of decline in insect diversity and abundance. As insects are indispensable in a variety of ecological processes (e.g. pollination and nutrient cycling), loss of insects has dramatic effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. As this undesired development results in part from human activities, it can only be resolved by changing roles, rules and regimes that affect human practices, in support of co-creating healthy landscapes in which biodiversity, including insect diversity, can be restored and safeguarded.
This project studies the interplay between ecological, social and institutional components of sustainable change at different levels. The project aims to understand whether and how ongoing conversations between different stakeholders involved contribute to the development and implementation of effective healthy landscape management. Research will be carried out in so-called living labs for healthy landscapes in which researchers from different disciplines collaborate with practitioners from different backgrounds with the aim to fundamentally improve the quality of green spaces.
Your tasks will be:
- to develop a sound research proposal, including a problem statement, a theoretical framework, research questions, a feasible methodology and a PhD action plan;
- to find answers to the research questions from an integral perspective;
- to contribute to the development of research methods and approaches in living lab contexts (e.g. the involvement of citizens in scientific research);
- to analyse and improve interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary conversations (including public debates) in developing healthy landscapes;
- to contribute to dialogues within scientific and societal contexts on the societal dimensions of healthy landscapes;
- to contribute to educational activities.

Requirements
- a Master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline with an interest in communication, land use planning and ecology;
- strong knowledge of and skills in research design, data collection, analysis, and presentation. Solid knowledge of and experience with qualitative data collection methods and analysis is a requirement, knowledge of and experience with quantitative, and/or spatial-temporal methods are considered additional advantages;
- interest in the interaction between the natural and social sciences;
- proven ability to work in interdisciplinary scientific teams and to collaborate with a range of societal stakeholders;
- strong oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English, particularly in terms of academic writing and presentation;
- creative, analytical thinking, open-mindedness and the ability to adapt to different socio-cultural and institutional contexts.

Conditions of employment
- you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years
- you will be classified as a PhD Candidate in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)
the gross starting salary amounts to €2,222 per month, and will increase to €2,840 in the fourth year;
