The successful candidate should be an authority in the field of geo-environmental engineering with a PhD degree in an area relevant to this field. He/she should have performed successful research in the field, published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and have a track record of obtaining research funding from research councils, government bodies, and industry. The research interests should be within the field of geo-environmental engineering and involve international collaboration with geo-scientific and geo-hydrological research groups. A clear and creative vision on the development of the field of geo-environmental engineering is of paramount importance. Equally central is the ability to initiate, acquire, execute and coordinate research projects. Inspiring lecturing skills are crucial for raising student interest and strengthening the current MSc programme.

He/she should be able to balance fundamental research on processes with translating findings into applications in society or policy-making. A research vision should be developed and implemented in close collaboration with the other chairs in the Geo-Engineering section and other groups at TU Delft in related fields, notably Water Management, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Materials and Environment (all at the faculty of CEG) and Biotechnology (at the Faculty of Applied Sciences), as well as with government bodies and industry.

Functie-eisen

Applicants should have a strong background in areas related to geo-environmental engineering, including numerical methods, laboratory experiments and fieldwork. Financial and human resources management skills are considered to be equally important as academic skills. The new successful applicant will lead and strengthen the group and secure the critical mass to guarantee long-term viability and sustainability of Geo-environmental Engineering. Working knowledge of the Dutch language needs to be acquired within a period of two years.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Initially this will be a temporary contract for four years, with the intention of converting the contract into permanent employment after four years. The salary of the Professor is based on scale H2 or H1 (minimum € 4904 and maximum € 8622 gross per month with a full-time appointment).

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The Department of Geotechnology conducts a programme for innovative exploration, exploitation and use of the Earth’s resources and subsurface space. It employs 120 staff members and teaches 250 students. The Department has an internationally leading role in research related to Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geology, and Geo-engineering. It operates a new, sophisticated laboratory where processes are monitored in situ.

The Geo-engineering section focuses on understanding, modelling, predicting and influencing the behaviour of the shallow subsurface, in particular with regard to soft soils. In addition, it has unique expertise in shallow subsurface construction, engineering and resource extraction. The Section operates at the interface between geotechnology and civil engineering and is responsible for BSc, MSc and PhD education in geomechanics, engineering geology, geo-environmental engineering, resource engineering, foundation engineering and sub-surface building technology.
