Job description

We are seeking an Assistant Professor of System Analysis and Design for Large-Scale Transport and Logistics, with a particular fascination for the organization and behavior of these systems. You will work on novel approaches for abstraction, modelling, and dynamic simulation of processes involving transport systems from equipment to network levels in industrial settings, while proposing new systems-of-systems design concepts. You are fascinated by Industry 4.0 ideas and logistics enhancing methods in rapidly developing environments with more modularization, autonomous transport components and robotics. You will make an active contribution to the group’s research and education curriculum for both the Bachelor and Master programs. You will develop and give lectures and supervise Master students with an engineering background in their final year. Initiating and carrying out high-level research projects and publishing research in leading journals are essential parts of the job.

Requirements

Applicants should have the following qualifications:
• A PhD and/or strong track record in the domain of (large-scale) industrial or maritime transport engineering and logistics;
• Excellent ability of abstraction for both qualitative and quantitative modelling (e.g., the Delft Systems Approach and process oriented simulation);
• Knowledge of systems analysis and design methods, simulation principles, and mathematical modelling in general;
• Excellent scientific credentials or extensive relevant practical experience;
• Experience with and ability to work in teams in an academic, interdisciplinary environment with engineers as well as people in other disciplines;
• Excellent didactic qualities and experience in teaching.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

The research and teaching involve the use of basic principles and applied engineering, with applications in transport and handling equipment, container/bulk terminals, port/intermodal logistics, and autonomous transport systems. Of particular interest are innovative concepts within and surrounding the domain of waterborne transport operations and logistics.
