Job description

We will hire a full-time (1.0 FTE) Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources (or an Assistant/Associate Professor with the capacity to develop into a full Professor in several years) in the section of Water Resources Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology. The main selection criterion is the scientific quality of the candidate, as witnessed through peer-reviewed publications, externally funded research projects, teaching excellence, and leadership. We would like to encourage candidates from a broad range of perspectives on water resources engineering to apply. Collaboration is highly valued, as can be seen in the track record of the current team and its strong national and international network. Delft University of Technology is world renowned for its water resources research, and the position is seen as strategic for staying at a top level globally. The position includes significant recurring resources to support the team. The university provides extensive support for grant acquisition and commits significant resources to translating the faculty’s discoveries into real-world implementation. Teaching tasks are moderate, allowing for meaningful interactions with the students. Teaching and research are closely intertwined.

Requirements

The successful candidate has a PhD in Hydrology, Water Resources, or a closely related field, and has broad experience in the field of water resources and hydrology, preferably including experience with different geographic settings. The candidate has an excellent track record in scientific publications and in acquisition and management of externally funded research projects. In addition, he or she has a clear vision on future developments in research in the field. The candidate has excellent teaching qualities and a strong interest in teaching the next generation. The ability to communicate fluently in English and the willingness to learn Dutch within the first three years are required.

Fixed-term contract: Tenured.

Civil Engineering & Geosciences

The Department of Water Management focuses on quantitative and qualitative aspects of fresh and salt/brackish water systems and related user functions, such as building, drinking water, wastewater and agriculture. Delft is a global centre for hydrological research and education, resulting from the necessity of excellent water management in the Netherlands. Within Delft, we cooperate closely with Deltares, UNESCO-IHE, and consulting firms.

The Water Resources Engineering section has an excellent international research reputation and is very well embedded in both the national and international research community and networks such as IAHS, AGU, and EGU. A significant part of the research is done in strong collaboration with national and international research institutes and industry. There is active interaction and cooperation with other relevant disciplines, particularly in the areas of new observation techniques (satellites, in situ, citizen science) and advanced mathematical techniques, such as data assimilation.
