Empirical research, security of critical infrastructure systems and services

Job description

The field of cybersecurity has seen a dramatic shift towards more empirical science. Merely designing technical solutions is not enough. Cybersecurity is about people as much as it is about technology. Understanding the behavior of malevolent actors and of potential victims of cybersecurity-breaches is also crucial for being able to design and operate secure infrastructures. The department’s cybersecurity research is expected to contribute significantly to our understanding of these interactions between the social and technological dimensions of cybersecurity.
One area where a more empirical approach to security is sorely needed is the protection of infrastructure systems and services. Critical infrastructures increasingly rely on ICT. The rise of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) accelerates the trend to bring computing into ever more processes and systems. At the same time, however, many control systems that ensure the continued availability and safety of critical infrastructures are closed systems with low computational capabilities, complicating the matter of measurement, data sharing and analysis. The ESS department sees cybersecurity as an important and growing area of research for building interoperable, flexible, robust, scalable and secure critical infrastructures.
The department seeks a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Cyber Security, with a strong affinity with measurement and data analytics. The candidate must also be interested in working closely with industry and governments, which are key research partners for the ESS department.
Data must be collected and processed from operational (control) systems in order to create situational awareness and identify the driving factors of security performance and failures. Monitoring and analyzing (potential) security breaches on our critical infrastructures, in the, often closed, control systems in gas grids, smart grids, water systems and mobility systems, are a condition-sine-qua-non for ensuring the basic principles of cybersecurity (confidentiality, integrity and availability).

Requirements

The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in computer science, computer engineering, AI, ICT architecting or a related field. The applicant should have a track record in measurement and data analytics, and a willingness to work on cybersecurity issues in critical infrastructures.
We seek candidates with an outstanding scientific track record, researchers with a pioneering, collaborative mentality who appreciate scientific and engineering challenges in cybersecurity sciences and who through their research, management skills and teaching qualities can inspire co-workers and students alike. During the tenure track appointment, Candidates are expected to build a strong, externally funded research program. A position for one PhD candidate may be part of a startup package for the successful candidate. Successful candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate (Dutch or English) and graduate level (English); proven by BKO certification or the willingness to obtain it.

TU Delft sets specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. TU Delft offers training to improve English competency.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Temporary for 6 years, with possibility of permanent employment.

The position offered is a tenure-track position for a period of six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made in the final year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. The tenure track assistant professor will be positioned in the Engineering Systems and Services (ESS) department of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. The core activity of the department is to model, understand, forecast, and shape emerging technological innovations and user patterns in the increasingly interconnected sectors of energy, mobility and ICT, and use these insights for improved design, regulation and operation of such engineering systems. ESS aims to contribute to the scholarly debate at the highest international level, and is rooted in both engineering and social sciences.

Although cybersecurity research in this tenure track position has data analytics for critical infrastructures and services as its main application area and starting point and is positioned within ESS, the research will be conducted in close collaboration with the multi-department cybersecurity group at the Faculty (chair Michel van Eeten), the department of Multi-actor Systems (MAS), the department of Values, Technology and Innovation (VTI) as well as with colleagues in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (chair Pieter Hartel).
