Modelling metal behaviour

Job description

The new position will augment activities of the department as a whole and applicants should therefore be familiar with aspects related to modelling metal behaviour. Experience with modelling other material classes is also welcome. Applicants should have an excellent track record in key computational areas including one or more of the following: defects in materials; films, surfaces and interfaces; microstructures and phase transformations; alloy design; multi-phase systems; behaviour under loading; and/or multi-scale computational strategies.
Teaching activities are required at the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily in the English language; a strong commitment to excellence is expected.
The position is offered with a 6-year contract; successful completion will lead to a permanent appointment.

A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. For more information about the Tenure Track and the personal development programme, please visit www.tudelft.nl/tenuretrack.

• Ability to write grant proposals, for both EU and Dutch funding programmes.
• Ability to play a leading role within the research field in collaboration with other universities, research institutes, and industry.
• Good communication skills, willingness and ability to collaborate.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

Employer

Delft University of Technology

Delft University of Technology (the TU Delft) is a multifaceted institution offering education and carrying out research in the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and design are strongly oriented towards applicability. The TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At the TU Delft you will work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. The TU Delft comprises eight faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.

Department

Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) aims to provide internationally recognised, high-quality research of benefit to industry and society, addressing material life cycle, structure, properties and functionality from a physics-based perspective. We provide coherent and innovative research dedicated to the sustainable development, characterisation, and understanding of materials that perform better, last longer, enhance function, and conserve resources. MSE operates on a principal investigator model, enabling researchers to maximise both individual and collective potential.

Current computational activities have a strong emphasis on metallic alloys and focus on how behaviour at the atomic scale leads to behaviour on micro- and macroscopic length and time scales. Educational activities cover the areas of solid-state physics, modelling, and the relationships between structure, bonding and properties. The successful candidate is expected to connect to one or more of the existing activities on ab initio, density functional theory and molecular dynamics-based atomistic modelling, discrete dislocation dynamics, crystal plasticity, phase field and FE modelling.
