The potential for visionary urban water infrastructure research is huge and the worldwide interest very high. Future urban water infrastructure demands call for innovative, climate-resilient distribution, drainage, and heat systems; increased flexibility of assets; clever, predictive sensor and control technology; understanding urban hydrology; understanding material aging and soil processes; advanced protection of human and environmental health; and energy- and resource-efficient water systems that are embedded in a circular economy. Alongside the prevailing obsolete infrastructure in Western countries, the majority of the world population is still deprived of adequate urban water infrastructure services. Sustainable and cost-efficient innovations brought forward by research in the envisaged field may contribute to leapfrogging conventional developments. Therefore, the TU Delft is giving the new professor the opportunity to build on an excellent research group (offering 2 FTE vacant positions), playing a world-leading role in urban water infrastructure research and education. The successful candidate has the following qualifications:
• A PhD in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
• Experience in several application fields and/or scientific disciplinary fields of urban water infrastructure as implemented in the setting of industrialised societies
• A drive to innovate through research
• The capacity to communicate effectively with peers, students and stakeholders in the application field
• An excellent track record in scientific publications, acquisition and management of externally funded research projects, and a clear view on required future developments, aiming at a high degree of sustainability in the application field
• Excellent teaching qualities
• Fluency in English and the willingness to learn Dutch within three years.

Civil Engineering & Geosciences

The Department of Water Management focuses on quantitative and qualitative aspects of fresh and salt/brackish water systems and related user functions such as building, drinking water, wastewater, and agriculture. The department also contributes to societal needs with respect to water management, water-related economic aspects, land use management, and optimisation questions with respect to water use and control.

The research of the Sanitary Engineering section focuses on user functions such as drinking water extraction, storage, purification and distribution, wastewater collection, transport, treatment, discharge, resource recovery from (waste)water, industry water, and urban water management and drainage.
