Job description

The job description for this position covers three aspects:

Education: It is expected that the post-doc will be actively involved in education programmes that the CE Lab is involved in. In particular, the CE Lab is working on the development of a new course on hardware security and an associated lab where experiments (such as side channel attacks) can take place.

Research: The post-doc is expected to perform research on hardware security in collaboration with PhD students (3 or 4 PhDs); the research programme can be part of EU projects, bilateral collaboration with industry or even national programmes.

Management: Together with the chair professor, the post-doc is also expected to take the lead in a hardware security team (3 or 4 PhDs and couple of master students). He/she will co-supervise the team and be active in some management teams, e.g., writing projects.

This position lends itself quite well to being the start of an academic career.

Requirements

You hold a PhD in computer engineering or a related discipline and you have a track record of scientific excellence in the field(s) of hardware security and physical attacks (side channel and fault injection), analysing and improving the security of the digital systems. Knowledge and experience in some or all of the following fields will be an asset:
• Physical attacks and countermeasures
• Cryptographic hardware systems
• Microprocessors Architecture
• Solid background in digital design, VLSI, computer arithmetic, and ASIC/FPGA implementation
• Good programming practice
The excellent scientific qualities of the candidate should be demonstrated by a PhD degree, publications in international refereed journals and conferences, and participation in relevant (inter)national networks.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

The Computer Engineering Laboratory (CE Lab) is one of the largest labs of the faculty with eight professors, six post-docs, and more than 40 PhDs. The CE Lab performs research in topics ranging broadly from computer arithmetic and computer architecture to compiler construction. The research focuses both on embedded systems and high performance computing without losing sight of future and emerging technologies. Our research concentrates on five domains: (1) Quantum Computing, (2) In-Memory Computing, (3) Big Data Architectures, (4) Liquid Architectures, and (5) Dependable Nano Computing.

Dependable Nano Computing research is driven by three major challenges: 1) technology scaling (causing extreme variability, reduced reliability, etc.), 2) globalisation of IC supply chain (demanding re-assessment of trust in hardware, IP protection, etc.) and 3) Internet of things (demanding secure End-to-End solutions, user privacy and data protection).
The research focuses on three topics: 1) Reliability (including modelling, monitoring, mitigation), 2) Testability (including Fault Modelling and Design-for-Testability for 3D stacked ICs and emerging memories), and 3) Hardware security (including PUF technology, side channel attacks, secure design, etc.).
