Operational processes and decision making for smooth railway transportation

Job description

You will conduct scientific research on real-time railway traffic management. The research will develop concepts, methodologies, and tools to support and automate operational processes and decision making for smooth railway transportation, increased capacity, and reduced delays. The research should take into account opportunities offered by new ICT technologies such as ERTMS and big data. You are expected to contribute to the initiation, acquisition, and execution of research projects, including supervision of PhD and MSc students. Cooperation with other members of the scientific staff and establishing relationships with practitioners are important. Moreover, you will contribute to teaching at the MSc and BSc levels.

Every new Assistant Professor will be given a Tenure Track position. Requirements

You must have a PhD degree in Railway Transportation or a related discipline, a fundamental knowledge of optimisation and computer programming skills. You should be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential, have published in leading international scientific journals, and have experience as a post-doctoral researcher. Experience in teaching is considered an advantage. You also have an open personality and good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. The Transport and Planning Department (T&P) has been awarded the maximum score for all research assessments for the last 15 years. The faculty was ranked second in the latest QS world university ranking, and Delft University of Technology was ranked first in the Shanghai Ranking 2017 in the field of Transport Science & Technology. T&P (with about 120 members) has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management, and intelligent transport systems of all transport modes, including road, railway, pedestrians, and urban public transport. A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporating human factors and advanced modelling tools.

The Railway Traffic Operations and Management group addresses analytics, modelling, algorithm development, and simulation for integral planning and management of railway operations with a focus on optimal utilisation of resources by improved methods for timetabling, train control, and real-time railway traffic management. The group is responsible for several MSc courses on railway operations, including ‘Railway Traffic Management’, ‘Railway Operations and Control’ and 'Transport Safety', and the supervision of MSc students graduating in railway operations.
