Department

Industrial Design Engineering

The Department of Design Engineering aims at exploring and disseminating new research knowledge to the international scientific community as well as to its educational programmes at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The focus is on incorporating new developments in advanced materials, novel manufacturing technologies, and hardware, software and cyberware technologies into products and services. Integration of expertise domains such as Emerging Materials, Advanced Mechatronics, Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems and Digital Manufacturing with considerations of Sustainability and the Circular Economy raises complexities that are addressed with regards to both systems and processes.
Research in the area of Emerging Materials is concerned with the application of new materials in product design, targeting those materials that will emerge in the market in the next five to fifteen years. A first group is that of so-called smart materials. These are materials that can sense and interact with the user. A second group is that of materials containing carbon nanotubes or graphene. In the coming years, the quality of these materials will improve and they will become more affordable, meaning that we need to investigate their potential applications in design. A third group of emerging materials comprises advanced bio-based plastics as alternatives to existing fossil fuel-based plastics.
