Job description

We are looking for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Intelligent Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Design. The Assistant Professor will foster education and research by creatively fusing methods from computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-centred design.
The focus of this position is the design and realisation of intelligent systems encompassing low-level sensing and higher-level reasoning to enable advanced decision making and novel user experience for next generation products and services. Teaching activities are required at the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily in the English language; a strong commitment to excellence is expected.

Requirements

The candidate should:
• hold a PhD degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Design, or a related field.
• have a strong technical background and be interested in doing fundamental reearch at the intersection of technology and design.
• have a solid scientific track record and an international network of contacts.
• have a strong background in experimental research methods.
• have experience in the development and teaching of BSc and MSc courses; however, beginning teachers may also apply.
• have a good command of English and good communication skills.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

Industrial Design Engineering

The Department of Design Engineering aims at exploring and disseminating new research knowledge to the international scientific community as well as to its educational programmes at the bachelor, master and PhD levels. The focus is on incorporating new developments in advanced materials, novel manufacturing technologies, and hardware, software and cyberware technologies into products and services. Integration of expertise domains such as emerging materials, advanced mechatronics, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, and digital manufacturing with sustainability and circular economy considerations raises complexities that are addressed with respect to both systems and processes.

The Assistant Professor position will be a member of the 'Internet of Things' research group which focuses on foundational methods and technologies for the design, development, and evaluation of data-intensive, context-aware products and services that use rich Internet of Things data to perceive, model, and adapt to their environment and users. This encompasses both technological innovation in Internet of Things systems and platforms as well as methodological innovations in data-intensive design applied to domains such as health, sports, transport, energy, and smart cities.
