Novel aircraft propulsion, aircraft configurations, high lift systems

Job description

This is a tenure-track position at the Assistant (or Associate) Professor level. The Flight Performance and Propulsion section has strengths and interests across the full spectrum of aircraft design and analysis, and excellent candidates with expertise in this area are sought. Although, all areas of aircraft design, flight mechanics, and propulsion integration will be considered, the research of the candidate will be focused on external flow aerodynamics related, to conventional and unconventional aircraft configurations, high lift systems and the airframe integration with propulsion systems (propeller and novel concepts included).

The approach is to work on system (complete aircraft) and subsystem design and analysis, including aero-structural models, in which use is made of state-of-the art CFD and experimental analysis. This work will be supported by other staff member's activities in multidisciplinary analysis and design and optimisation (MDAO).
Additionally, the candidate is expected to have experience with applied aerodynamics and experimental research, in order to contribute to the activities currently performed in the Faculty of Aerospace wind tunnels, on special topics like propulsion integration (e.g. open rotors and boundary layer ingestion). Recently, work has been initiated in the field of scaled flight testing, in which the flight mechanical behaviour of unconventional designs plays an important role in the development process of future aircraft. To this purpose the ability and interest to combine theoretical and numerical simulation work with experimental and manual work in the Faculty new born Scaled Flight Lab are considered a pro. Maintaining an independent research programme in an international context and further developing a close relationship with industry is highly encouraged. The FPP section has already strong links to the aerospace industry, including Airbus and Fokker, as well as with research institutes such as NLR, DLR, ONERA and NASA. The candidate is expected to efficiently utilise these contacts to define cooperative research on the MSc and PhD levels.
Other duties include teaching undergraduate/graduate level courses and supervising MSc en PhD students. The position is available immediately. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and professional experience.

A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. Requirements

The candidate has already earned the PhD title and possibly accumulated further experience as postdoctoral researcher or in industry. She/he has a solid background in aerospace engineering as well as key knowledge and experience in the field of applied aerodynamics and airframe-propulsion integration related to aircraft design, proven by a good record of international and peer reviewed publications. Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching and research excellence, and dedication to continued professional development. Key elements of this position are the ability to supervise and motivate students, excellent organisational skills, and good interaction with MSc and PhD students. Furthermore, good presentation and communication skills are significant assets. Demonstrated ability in written and spoken English is required, as is the willingness to learn Dutch.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.
The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
The TU Delft sets specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. Training is offered if necessary.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. If you have less than five years of experience and do not yet have your teaching certificate, we allow you up to three years to obtain such certification.

Department

Aerospace Engineering

The Department of Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) is one of four departments composing the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Fundamental research is performed in the Aerodynamics section. Aircraft design, propulsion systems, and their integration are the main topics in the FPP section. Wind energy systems, from small wind turbines to large, offshore installations, are the research objective in the Wind Energy section. The department has access to comprehensive laboratories, equipped with modern wind tunnels and state-of-the-art measurement systems. A large computer cluster enables numerical simulations for complex aerodynamic and physical problems.

The vacancy is in the Flight Performance and Propulsion section and focuses on fundamental and applied research in the field of aircraft design, propulsion systems, and their integration. Tools and methodology development for aircraft design is combined with system analysis and design in the area of high lift systems, flight mechanics of unconventional aircraft, open rotor propulsion and propulsion system analysis. Technology development is done in strong interaction with other sections such as Aerodynamics, Aerospace Structures and Materials, and Aircraft Transport and Operation, as well as industry and research institutes, both at national and international level.
