We are recruiting an Assistant Professor to strengthen and extend our activities on 3D city modelling for urban applications. Our current research and work encompasses most of the 3D geoinformation chain: 3D data acquisition, processing, analysis, and its use in different applications (e.g. noise and air quality simulations, energy estimation, and safety applications).

The aim of the new position is to extend our research on existing applications, as well as find new, innovative applications for 3D data in different domains related to cities. This will require a close collaboration with urban/landscape scientists and designers in our faculty, as well as with experts in different domains outside the university.

The task for this position is to lead the research on the innovative use of 3D geoinformation in environmental technology and design, in landscape architecture, and in urban planning and design. Apart from this research task, the candidate will have to teach and develop new courses related to the field of research in the MSc programmes Geomatics and Urbanism at the TU Delft and at The Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS).

The expected start date is 1 June 2018, or as soon as possible.

The candidate should:
• hold a PhD degree in a field related to 3D geoinformation (geomatics, geography, computer science, GIS, urbanism, or a comparable subject) and have ample experience and knowledge in 3D city modelling.
• have excellent scientific skills, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.
• have an affinity for programming.
• have prior experience in supervision of PhD and MSc students.
• have proven didactic skills and teaching experience, since the candidate will have to teach (in English).
The ability to develop prototypes and software is an advantage.

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

Architecture

The Department of Urbanism in the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology was established in 1948 and since then has contributed to academic knowledge of the urban environment and design and planning interventions. The Urbanism research group’s core task is to mobilise its multidisciplinary knowledge, skills and reputation towards the creation of more sustainable living environments. The priority is to contribute solutions to the urgent challenges of urbanisation in the context of climate change.

The 3D geoinformation research group (https://3d.bk.tudelft.nl/), part of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology, focuses on the technologies underpinning geographical information systems (GIS) and aims at designing, developing, and implementing better systems to model 3D cities, buildings, and landscapes.
It is a multidisciplinary group of around 20 people, including computer scientists, geomatics engineers, and geographers; three are tenured staff (one Professor, one Associate Professor, and one Assistant Professor).
It has a history of successful collaborations with industry and government; its research has led to open source software, standards, and patents for the management of 3D geographic information.
