Risk assessment and safe design in the biotechnology sector

Job description

The TTRIPP (Tools for Translation of Risk Research Into Policies & Practices) research project is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the STW programme of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment. The project aims at developing tools that support risk assessment as well as safe design in the biotechnology domain. These tools will increase the effectiveness of risk research and safe design by aligning goals and priorities in the biotechnology sector, translating research into policies and practices, and creating a learning environment for a dynamic and iterative process. Within the project's multi-disciplinary research team, the post-doctoral researcher's task is to analyse existing policies and practices of risk assessment and safe design. As a second step, a serious game will be developed to make employees in the domain aware of risks, risk assessment, and mitigation procedures, and help them to develop their own practices and policies in this field. This task will be carried out in close cooperation with the TU Delft’s Gamelab.

Department

Technology, Policy & Management

The position is in the Department of Multi-Actor Systems (MAS), which studies analysis, design, and governance of large-scale technical systems. The Policy Analysis section aims at supporting strategic decision-making. Organisations and their members in a field such as biotechnology face complex challenges. Decisions they make today have long-term consequences. New risk assessments and management methods might be needed to address these challenges. The uncertainty inherent in large-scale systems makes it very difficult to oversee the consequences of decisions. Instruments used to get a picture of and influence risk assessment and management are simulation gaming and modelling.
