Establishing corrosion mechanisms at the micro- and nanoscale and verifying the limits of existing localised electrochemical techniques

Job description

The PhD student position is part of a European ITN network consisting of 15 PhD students enrolled at different universities and institutes across Europe, called mCBEEs (see www.mcbees.eu). The mCBEEs consortium aims to perform research related to corrosion at the microscale in applications linked to electronics, energy, and biomaterials. Each PhD student in the consortium will focus on a specific project but with a certain level of interconnection and synergy with the others. Inside the consortium, the students will attend common training activities and networking events.
The present research project will focus on the research of the main mechanism of corrosion in micro- and nanodevices. Corrosion will be studied first in model samples with controlled properties (composition, film thickness, geometry, etc.) and later on in real devices. Experiments will be perfomed using high-resolution electrochemical methods. The main goal is to establish the corrosion mechanisms at the micro- and nanoscale and to verify the limits of the existing localised electrochemical techniques (e.g. SECM, EC-AFM). During the project, three research stays are planned with some consortium partners (Belgium, Switzerland, Turkey).
