High-strength steels and fracture toughness, cleavage fracture micromechanisms, development and validation of the fracture model, considering the statistical distribution of microstructural properties

Job description

The MicroTough project aims at developing a relation between microstructural characteristics of high-strength steels and their fracture toughness. We will generate a physically-based statistical model to predict cleavage fracture based on a statistical distribution of microstructural parameters. By providing a bridge between complex, multi-parameter microstructural geometry and properties to macroscopically observable fracture toughness, this research will deliver a functional tool to understand and analyse the material in a new way from the material manufacturing process to the safety of the whole structure.

The project is organised along two interrelated sub-projects, which means a close collaboration between 2 PhD students will be expected. In project 1, high-strength steels with appropriate chemical composition will be generated and subjected to characterisation of 3D microstructure, microstructural mechanical properties, and cleavage fracture micromechanisms. Project 2 will focus on development and validation of the fracture model, considering the statistical distribution of microstructural properties. This is a joint project between the TU Delft and TNO, with Allseas Engineering, the Dutch Ministry of Defence, Dillinger, and Lloyds Register. The responsible department at TNO will be Structural Dynamics, which brings structural research into application in the Dutch and European maritime and offshore industry.

We are still looking for a suitable MSc graduate for the computational part (project 2)of this project. 

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

- excellent analytical skills, initiative, inventiveness, curiosity, diligence, and critical thinking skills;
- ability to work with scientific and industrial partners;
- strong communication skills (high level of English proficiency), team player, and good social behaviour.

Project 2:
- demonstrated competences in computational methods using FEA and mechanics of materials;
- strong understanding of continuum mechanics. 

We have a strong preference for EU or Western nationality due to Ministry of Defense policy.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.
