Functiebeschrijving

The SuperGPS project is being carried out jointly by the TU Delft Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Sciences (EEMCS). The post-doc should complement the current project team and will be appointed for a 2.5 years' term at the CEG faculty. In addition to research on radio signal processing and positioning, he/she will be leading the development of the hybrid optical-wireless timing and positioning prototype system, with the aim of a live demonstration in a highway scenario by the end of the project in 2020. Specifically, he/she will supervise and contribute to the PhD students’ work on the prototype system and coordinate the actual demonstration with partners in the project.

The SuperGPS-project aims at developing a hybrid optical-wireless system for accurate positioning, navigation, and network synchronization. To this end, a tightly synchronized optical telecommunications infrastructure will be realized, which will serve as a backbone for a wireless enhanced terrestrial positioning system. This positioning system will use wideband radio signals, rather than today’s relatively narrowband GNSS signals. SuperGPS should allow for simultaneous data, time and frequency transfer (with 10 picosecond accuracy and 10-18 relative stability, respectively) through fiber-optic networks, and radio positioning (with 1 decimeter accuracy, or better), in particular under those circumstances in which satellite navigation is not available, or only with strongly reduced performance. The results of the project will have many applications, including smart highways and self-driving vehicles. A pilot demonstration (proof-of-principle) of SuperGPS technology on a highway under operational circumstances is the final aim of the project.
The project has started in Fall 2016, and the research-team currently consists of three PhD-students, supervised by two academic staff members at TU Delft, and, the project is actively supported by several partners from industry.

Functie-eisen

Candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in electrical engineering, e.g. telecommunications, signal processing or micro-electronics, as well as an excellent command of English, proven teamwork competencies, and good laboratory and programming skills (working with measurement equipment, electronics, and hardware). In addition, hardware programming skills are recommended (VHDL code development).

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The TU Delft offers an attractive, customisable compensation and benefits package, including a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers day care, before- and after-school care and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
