Job description

Thermoplastic composites are the lightweight materials of the future, supporting the automotive and aerospace needs to reduce fuel consumption and extend vehicle range. They combine low weight with reduced processing costs and the possibility for end-of-life recycling. Unfortunately, the long-term performance of these materials is currently very poorly predictable. As a consequence, composite parts are generally overdesigned and, therefore, not optimal in weight reduction. The candidate will work in the context of a project funded by the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) aiming at improved predictability of the performance of thermoplastic composite parts through experimental and numerical research. This PhD project is focused on the numerical aspects. Its main objective is the development of a computational multiscale model for the long-term behavior of thermoplastic composites.
