Departmental setting

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences (IE &IS) engages in research and teaching in the areas of industrial engineering, management science, and innovation science. The mission of the department is closely tied to its pioneering work in developing an engineering perspective on business processes, as well as its interdisciplinary research on transitions in societies in relation to technical changes. At the heart of its academic philosophy is the synergy between research and teaching. The department offers an academic environment in which scholars and students work on critical problems at the interface of engineering, management and innovation. The department has two schools: Industrial Engineering (IE) and Innovation Sciences (IS). The school of Industrial Engineering focuses on the design, behavior and performance of operational and innovation processes in industrial and service organizations. It covers the complete business chain of product design, process design, production, purchasing, outsourcing, distribution and marketing & sales.

The School of Industrial Engineering currently includes the following research groups:

  • Operations Planning, Accounting & Control;
  • Human Performance Management;
  • Information Systems;
  • Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship & Marketing.

  • The open positions are part of the Operations Planning, Accounting & Control group.

    Operations Planning, Accounting & Control group

    OPAC currently consists of 5 full professors, 3 associate professors, 14 assistant professors, 7 postdoctoral fellows, and 24 PhD students. OPAC is recruiting two postdocs. The faculty teaches and conducts research in the area of operations planning and control in manufacturing, supply chains, transport, and maintenance. Research is generally quantitative in nature, while many of the researchers also engage in empirical research.

    The OPAC group is responsible within the university for all teaching in the areas of operations management, transportation, reliability, and accounting and finance, both at undergraduate and graduate level.

    Description of the position

    Disciplinary focus

    For these positions, we are open to any relevant research area in Operations Management that is rigorous and relevant to industry. Purely methodological (OR) research does not fit into the group's profile, but any Operations Management research does, such as, but not limited to:

  • The interface between operations and revenue management
  • Data-driven operations management
  • Sustainable operations management
  • Behavioral operations management
  • The interface between operations and marketing
  • The interface between operations and finance & accounting
  • Performance of manufacturing systems
  • Inventory control
  • Supply chain planning
  • Transportation & logistics
  • Reliability and maintenance

    Research

    The selected postdocs perform active research, collaborate with current faculty, and publishes on the research in academic journals.

    Teaching

    Each postdoc will spend 30% of his/her time to teaching, which includes the supervision of MSc and BSc thesis projects.

    Requirements

  • PhD in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Econometrics, Operations Research, or a comparable domain.
  • Demonstrable ability to conduct academic research of high quality on relevant problems, demonstrated for instance by a relevant PhD thesis and/or publications.
  • Demonstrable ability to teach, shown for instance by experience or assistance in teaching and positive evaluations of these teaching efforts.
  • Excellent mastering of the English language, good communication and leadership skills. Note that there is not a Dutch language requirement.
  • Conditions of employment

    We offer:
  • a challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university;
  • an appointment for a period of 24 months;
  • a gross monthly salary between € 3.111 and € 4.048, based on a full-time appointment and depending on experience and knowledge;
  • a yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
  • a yearly end year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
