Job description

Postdoc position: Architectures for In-Memory Computations
We are looking for a talented Postdoc with a PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related disciplines with excellent grades, and good publications.

Background
The classical Von Neumann computer architectures force data to be moved from a background memory to the processor before computations can be performed. Modern applications, e.g from the domain of big data, do not fit well on this architecture. Typically their performance is hampered by the memory bottleneck (due to lack of memory bandwidth, too long memory latencies, little data reuse opportunities, etc.). Near memory computations have been proposed to partially address this bottleneck. The H2020 project MNEMOSENE takes this idea one step further. It will develop and demonstrate a new, ultra-low energy, computation-in-memory (CIM) based architecture, including simulation and compiler tools; so the computation will as close as possible to the memory.

Research position
The postdoc will be involved in the advanced scientific research and teaching responsibilities of the Electronic Systems Group of Eindhoven University of Technology. Within the specific MNEMOSE project, he will focus on computation in memory and the development of an innovative multi-tile memristor-based non-Von Neumann architecture, which supports both storage and computation in the same physical location. This research will be executed in close collaboration with other universities and research organizations in- and outside The Netherlands. He will have many opportunities to coach and work with several PhD- and Master students, who work on In-Memory Computing and who combine extensive knowledge in the key fields (e.g. memristors, compilers, simulators, memory hierarchy, and computer architectures). The whole project team includes industrial partners from ARM, IBM, and various leading universities in Europe. This cooperation ensures that the developed concepts are suitable for future real-life applications.

Location
The research will be carried out in the new laboratory of the Electronic Systems Group of Eindhoven University of Technology. The Electronic Systems (ES) group consists of seven full professors, one associate professor, eight assistant professors, several postdocs, about 30 PDEng and PhD candidates and support staff. The ES group is world-renowned for its design automation and embedded systems research.
