Job description

About Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e):

The TU/e is a University of Technology with a focus on Health, Energy and Mobility. Within the Health area, several departments cooperate on topics such as Chemical Biology, Regenerative Medicine, Computational Biology, and Biosensing, with close links to healthcare and industry. The TU/e is an open and inclusive university with short communication lines. The people are curious, collaborative, and strive for excellence. TU/e enables its academic staff to develop research and education at an internationally renowned level. Our lively campus community facilitates connections between staff and students, in an open, friendly, vibrant atmosphere that welcomes and inspires.

About the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME):

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a research driven BME Bachelor program and Masters Biomedical Engineering, Medical Sciences and Technology and Medical Engineering in its Graduate Program. Research areas range from Molecular Bioengineering and Imaging, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering to Biomedical Imaging and Modeling. The department has more than 800 students and up to 200 tenured and non-tenured employees.

About the group:

The research of the Bio-organic chemistry group is aimed at the development of smart nanosized compartments. These compartments are used in nanomedicine as vehicles in drug delivery and as scaffolds in immunology. Furthermore, they are employed as nanoreactors, with application potential in artificial cell and organelle research. The nanomedicine research line in particular concerns medicine transport systems and synthetic vaccines. Using a combination of techniques from polymer science to protein engineering, well-defined carriers and scaffolds are developed for application in e.g. cancer treatment, immunology and ophthalmology.

About the Radboudumc/RIMLS:

The Radboudumc is one of the University Medical Centers of the Netherlands with a mission to have a significant impact on health care. The Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS) at the Radboudumc conducts research on the molecular basis of health and disease with the aim to develop new diagnostics and therapies. Nanomedicine and Women's cancers are two of the research themes of the Radboudumc. The Radboudumc provides excellent research facilities among which the microscopy imaging center with a panel of advanced microscopy techniques, the PRIME for preclinical imaging, and facilities for animal experimentation.

About the Departments of Biochemistry and Gynecology:

The department of Biochemistry is one of the preclinical departments of the Radboudumc with research in targeted drug delivery, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, and mitochondrial dynamics and metabolism. Fundamental research is conducted in close collaboration with clinical groups to promote a translation of fundamental insights into potential clinical applications. TEMPEAT builds on projects using protein engineering of nanobodies to target cancer and intracellular delivery of nanoparticles using cell-penetrating peptides.

The Dept. of Biochemistry has a long-standing collaboration with the Dept. of Gynecology and in particular Gynecological Oncology which provides patient care in this field but also strives to develop novel treatment regimes with the aim to improve the survival and quality of life of the patients.

Job Description:

A postdoctoral position is available for the development of temperature]responsive polypeptide nanocarriers for controlled drug delivery to metastasized ovarian cancer. The function is part of the European project TEMPEAT. The nanocarrier systems will be made and tested in close collaboration between TU/e and the Radboudumc. Activities include the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles, their functionalization, optimization and functional characterization, in vitro and in vivo. The techniques range from protein expression and purification to the characterization of nanoparticles using physicochemical techniques, cellular uptake and activity to in vivo testing in murine ovarian cancer models. The research tasks are closely embedded in ongoing research activities of the participating departments. As a post-doc you will be responsible for the overall organization of the project at TU/e and RIMLS, and it is expected that you will be working at both sites.
