Assistant Professor Data Science in Marketing

Job description

For the Assistant Professor position Data Science in Marketing we are looking for candidates with a strong expertise in data-driven analytics in a marketing or consumer interaction context. The candidate should have experience in applying and evaluating contemporary approaches in data science to improve marketing effectiveness (e.g., social network analysis, natural language processing, Web metrics, and data visualization). An important role for the Assistant Professor is to apply real-time cognitive support systems or data from an IoT infrastructure in consumer interaction.

The candidate should be capable to set up scientific evaluations of the impact of innovative, technology-driven service designs, leading to new insights in Marketing Science.

We are looking for ambitious candidates with a PhD in Marketing, Data Science, or closely related fields, with a proven record in applying contemporary data-driven techniques to solve theoretical and applied challenges in Marketing. We foresee core research and education in application areas such as Consumer Marketing, Services Marketing, Social Network Analysis, and Cognitive Support Systems.

The successful candidate will work one day a week in the department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management of Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, and four days a week in the Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute in Heerlen

The candidate should contribute to the development of Bachelor, Master, and postgraduate education, as well as tailor-made courses on demand. Market-driven requirements as well as state-of-the-art developments of technology and knowledge are to be seen as inputs for courses and educational programs. Typical workload: 40 % education (including education development) and 60%  research, of which a significant part in collaboration with industry.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent advanced degree in marketing or closely related fields;
  • Preferably a proven teaching track record;
  • Good record in academic research and proven experience in real-world applications;
  • Self-motivation, ability to work in teams;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with scientists, corporates, SME’s, Start-Ups and stakeholders in the public sector, at a variety of levels in a collaborative, effective manner;
  • Entrepreneurial, pioneering attitude;
  • Experience in acquiring research funding is a pro.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

Salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience, between € 3.475,00 and € 4.757,00 gross per month for a fulltime Assistant Professorship (12 monthly payments). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Applicants could be eligible for a favourable tax treatment (30% rule).

Contract type:
Candidates are employed temporarily as Assistant Professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, or earlier, as soon as the development goals are met, the candidate is promoted to Assistant Professor (level 1) in permanent employment. On the candidate’s request, the decision can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave, or chronic illness.

The newly established Business Intelligence and Smart Services Institute (www.biss-institute.com) is a joint initiative by Maastricht University, Open University, and University of Applied Sciences Zuyd. At the institute, an interdisciplinary research team performs applied and fundamental research on technological, business and societal aspects of data- driven smart services. It also hosts educational labs in which students from all three universities work on applied projects in a diversity of functional areas such as Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Health Care and Smart Cities.
