The Department of International and European Law of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University intends to appoint a fulltime Assistant Professor of International Law (‘Universitair Docent’) with a starting date of 1 May 2018 (or a period shortly after that). Applicants must have proven expertise in public international law. The appointee will be required to teach at bachelor and master level, to contribute to the development of courses, to conduct high quality research within the Faculty’s research programme Integration of and Interaction between Legal Orders and the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights, to write research and funding proposals and to fulfill administrative duties.

• PhD degree in international Law (or obtain a PhD degree in the near future);

• Excellent research and teaching skills;

• Excellent organisational skills;

• Excellent English language skills (written and spoken);

• Knowledge of the Dutch language is an advantage.

Fixed-term contract: 5 years.

Candidates are employed temporarily as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific performance goals. Five years after appointment, or earlier as soon as the performance goals are met, the candidate is promoted to assistant professor (level 1) in a permanent employment. On the candidate’s request, the decision on a permanent employment can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave, or chronic illness.

The salary depends on academic qualifications and experience. The salary will be set in salary scale 11 (minimum gross month salary € 3.475,00 and maximum € 4.757,00) and after being promoted to assistant professor level 1 the salary will be set in salary scale 12 (minimum gross month salary € 4.210 and maximum € 5.405,00) of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities.
