Job description

Data Science@Maastricht University is a pioneering, university-wide network of data-driven researchers with more than 25 years’ experience in data science education and research. Our community consists of multidisciplinary teams that address significant scientific problems and major societal issues through and related to data science including social, legal and ethical concerns in a wide range of academic disciplines. The Data Science@ UM community is expanding with at least 10 new positions in 2018. One of these positions is an Assistant Professorship in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

We invite applications for a joint tenure-track position in the Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering and the Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University. The successful candidate will demonstrate a cutting-edge research programme in any of artificial intelligence, deep learning, and/or data visualization. The candidate will lead multidisciplinary research teams, participate in teaching in educational programmes, and pursue strategies to translate research results into innovation. We welcome applicants whose research has led to, or has the potential to lead to real-world applications and/or strong collaborations with industry.

Requirements

Applicants should fulfill the following main requirements:

  • PhD degree in data science, artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, or a related field;

  • At least 2 years of experience in an academic environment after the PhD period;

  • Excellence in research and a track record of obtaining research funding;

  • Experience and excellence in teaching;

  • Experience in supervising Bachelor, Masters, or PhD students;

  • A personality characterized by vision, ambition, and collaboration;

  • Fluency in the English language.

Conditions of employment

The salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be set in scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities, with an expected minimum of € 3.475,- and a maximum of € 4.757,- for a full-time position of 38 hours/week. In addition there is an 8% holiday and 8.3% year-end allowance. Contract type

Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

Intended start date is as soon as possible. Maastricht University requires teaching staff to have the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or acquire this qualification preferably within the first year.

Founded in 1992 as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, today DKE broadly covers Data Science and Knowledge Engineering in research and teaching. DKE comprises three internationally respected research groups, having their focus on “Robotics, Agents and Interaction”, “Networks and Strategic Optimization”, and “Biomathematics and Bioinformatics”. Education programmes offered by DKE are a BSc in Data Science & Knowledge Engineering, a MSc in Artificial Intelligence, and a MSc in Data Science for Decision Making. The Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University (IDS@UM) is a recently established center led by distinguished professor Michel Dumontier. The mission of the Institute of Data Science is to foster an interfaculty environment for collaborative innovation in the development and application of data science technologies. IDS consists of a core team of data science experts that cooperate closely with researchers across disciplines such as medicine, life sciences, law, social sciences and humanities, business and economics, knowledge engineering and smart services.
