Job description

The ‘stem-cell theory’ of ageing posits that the functional decline in adult stem cells is one of the factors contributing to ageing. Importantly, the number of stem cells does not diminish with age in many tissues but rather there are intrinsic and extrinsic changes that affect their functionality. Is it possible to reverse these changes? Experiments in several model organisms, including the flatworm Macrostomum lignano, suggest that this is indeed the case. We are developing M. lignano as a model organism to address these and other questions for research on stem cells, regeneration and ageing. To extend our ongoing efforts, we are looking for experimental and computational biology postdoctoral researchers.

Requirements

The Postdoc will be part of a young and enthusiastic research group and should have the following requirements:
- Highly motivated with a proven track record of previous research.
- Training in molecular biology and genetics.
- Knowledge of the stem cell or ageing research field is a plus.
- A computational biologist must have experience with the analysis of high-throughput sequencing datasets, in application to genome assembly and gene expression analysis or comparative genomics.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. You may be required to build up sufficient protection against Hepatitis B before you can be appointed. Vaccination is provided by the UMCG if necessary.

Conditions of employment

Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month € 4.620,- (scale 11).
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period.
Duration of the contract: Three years.
The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).

Organisation

ERIBA: European Institute for the Biology of Ageing

Department

The ERIBA is a newly established institute at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The central theme at the ERIBA is the molecular mechanism of (cellular) ageing. We aim to identify physiological and molecular changes that can explain the loss of cells and functional decline of cells and tissues with age. For this, we make use of state of the art technology and a variety of model organisms. Furthermore, we heavily invest in Systems Biology to integrate our findings in the various mechanisms of ageing that have been proposed. The ERIBA is housed in a brand new building and part of the central UMCG campus in central Groningen, a small (200,000 inhabitants) but vibrant city (with over 25,000 students) in the north of the Netherlands.
