Job description

In a research project funded by the Dutch Cancer Foundation (KWF) you will study the functional relationship between MYC and the TSC-mTORC1-pathway in cancer biology. Understanding the oncogenic functions of the oncogene MYC are critical long-term goals in cancer research. Currently, the options to directly targeting MYC are limited and their applicability in therapy are uncertain. Resent results from our lab point to novel possibilities for treatment of MYC-driven cancers like Burkitt lymphoma or lung cancer by using a synthetic lethal approach through modulation of the TSC-mTORC1-mitochondrial metabolism regulatory axis. We aim to reveal the involved molecular mechanisms, mitochondrial biology as well as the therapeutic possibilities of this synthetic lethal interaction. To achieve our scientific goals our lab combines a wide variety of molecular biology techniques with experimental mouse models, and we collaborate with basic and clinical researchers.

ERIBA: The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing

ERIBA, the European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing, is a newly established institute at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). The mission of ERIBA is to better understand the molecular mechanisms that result in age-related decline and age-related diseases. We aim to develop novel strategies to prevent or combat age-related diseases and to provide evidence-based recommendations for healthy ageing. The research teams are working with different model systems and technology platforms and share their knowledge and expertise to accelerate discoveries. The ERIBA is housed in a new building and is part of the central UMCG campus in the vibrant University City Groningen in the north of the Netherlands.

The Calkhoven lab at ERIBA is looking for a post-doctoral researcher and PhD student.
