Job description

PhD student strain and deformation
Currently, post processing of ultrasound images of the female pelvic floor muscles is limited to 2-D datasets, although 3-D images are collected. The acquisition time of the ultrasound images of the pelvic floor muscles during contraction is too long to allow adequate tracking algorithms to be of use for detecting and estimate movements. The participation of Philips ultrasound in this project ensures the availability of a fast tracking (matrix) probe and TomTec provides basic strain software for further development. The goal of the project is to develop 3D strain and tracking algorithms tailored for the female pelvic floor.

Requirements

  • An MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Physics or a similar university degree;
  • Excellent skills in signal and image processing;
  • Interested in hardware as well as in software development;
  • Interested in working in a hospital environment;
  • Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: employment will be for four years.

Salary is € 2244 gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2874 gross per month in the last fourth year, plus additional vacation bonus (8% per year) and end of year payments (8.3% per year).

Recently, a grant of the Dutch Technology Foundation (NWO-TTW) was awarded for the project "GYNaecological Imaging using 3D Ultrasound (GYNIUS)". Goal of this project is to develop methods to obtain functional and morphological information of the female pelvic floor muscles by an automatic segmentation model and deformation imaging. Finally, these will be tested on patients with pelvic floor disorders.

GYNIUS is a collaboration between the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University Medical Center Utrecht (Prof. Huub van der Vaart), the Medical UltraSound Imaging Center (MUSIC) of the Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (Prof. Chris de Korte), Twente University technical medicine (Prof. Kees Slump), Philips Ultrasound, and TomTec.
For GYNIUS, we have vacant positions for a full-time enthusiastic PhD student (4 years) and one part time (0.3) Post-Doc (4 years) at the Radboud University Medical Center. For the automatic segmentation and the clinical evaluation, PhD students have already been appointed at the Twente University and the University Medical Center Utrecht respectively. Each of the 3 participating academic centers are leading for medical science, education and health care.
