The Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) has awarded a consortium grant to our team for studying the potential of tumor budding (i.e. the presence of single tumor cells or small tumor clusters at the invasive front of cancer) as a biomarker. Together with international experts in the field of histological biomarkers in colorectal cancer we will develop a robust and reproducible method for quantification of tumor budding, validate the prognostic and predictive value of tumor budding, and determine the relationship with other biomarkers.
 
In this 4-year PhD-project, you will investigate the relationship between tumor budding and molecular subtypes. You will be involved in the collection of tumor samples and the associated clinical and follow-up data, and will perform histopathological and molecular analyses. Additionally, you will visit several of the other consortium partners doing on-site projects. You will work closely together with a PhD specialized in computational pathology and will be involved in digital image analyses. You will be part of a cross-disciplinary research team striving to do world-class science and answer many questions about colorectal cancer.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with (most of) the following qualifications:

• Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, (Medical) Biology, Medicine, or a relevant other discipline;
• Interest in translational research in oncology and histopathology;
• Experience with immunohistochemistry;
• Affinity with analysis of large data sets using statistical software (e.g. SPSS);
• Structured and accurate working style, demanding high quality of your own work;
• Good English writing and presentation skills;
• Strong self-motivation, flexibility, and persistence;
• Well-developed skills to work in a multidisciplinary team;
• You recognise yourself in the Radboud way of working.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Scale 10A: max € 40814 gross per year at full employment (incl. vacation bonus and end of year payments)

You will join a multidisciplinary team at the department of Pathology. The team is part of the Research Theme "Tumors of the Digestive Tract", one of the core themes of the Radboud university medical center. We will train and mentor you during the course of this project. You will join the PhD program of the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS).
