Functiebeschrijving

This PhD project entitled “Inside the emotional brain of voters” concerns the role of emotions in voter decision making. Emotions are often seen as important motivational forces in democratic elections and they have become an important focus of attention in voting research. The aim of this project is to expand our understanding of this topic through theoretical as well as methodological innovations. At the theoretical level the project focuses in particular on how emotions are linked to policy issues and thereby influence voting decisions, building on political science theories about issues and voting. At the methodological level the project is innovative because of the use of brainimaging technology, taking advantage of theories and methods from neuroscience. At the heart of the project is a series of experiments that will be developed and validated in a computer lab setting and then functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to assess the fundamental brain mechanisms involved. The expected research output is a series of journal articles that culminate in a doctoral dissertation. The project is carried out in collaboration with the decision neuroscience lab at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (Radboud University). The project team that supports the PhD candidate consists of political scientists and neuroscientists from different departments (prof. dr. Kees Aarts, dr. Giedo Jansen, prof. dr. David Norris, dr. Martin Rosema, and prof. dr. Alan Sanfey).
