Recently, the field of Data Science has received remarkable attention also for tackling complex transport engineering problems. The design, operation and maintenance of transport systems are now undergoing noticeable transformation as a result of huge amounts of information provided by emerging experimentation, testing and monitoring systems. There is a huge potential for (big) data collected from a wide range of sensors, e.g. smart cards, mobile phones, internet of things, to be used in transportation research and planning. Also, ICT enable the development of new adaptive transport systems, such as mobility-as-a-service concepts, and programmes that aim to change individual travel behaviour, for example through personalized incentives using smartphone apps. The key role of data science technologies, spatial data and geo-visualization techniques opens unprecedented opportunities to significantly improve the understanding of travel patterns and management of transport systems. The Department of Civil Engineering, of the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente invites candidates to apply for an assistant professorship position in the area of Data Science in Transport Engineering

Teaching: The new assistant professor will contribute to the BSc program in Civil Engineering, as well as to the transport related tracks in the Master programme in Civil Engineering and Management. Also, the assistant professor will supervise BSc- and MSc-thesis projects. The total teaching load will be about 50%. If the candidate is not yet formally qualified for teaching at universities, we offer a program to obtain this qualification within 2 years (University Teaching Qualification, UTQ).

Research: We look for an independent researcher who is able to identify the academic questions in practical applications related to Data Science in Transport Engineering and to translate academic research results into engineering practice. He/she is expected work on transport research projects with multiple-source (big) data, to publish research results in high quality international refereed journals, and to attract external funding (national science foundation, EU, government and industry) for junior researchers (PhD and PDeng positions), of whom he/she will become the daily supervisor.

Start: asap after November 1st 2017

• You hold a PhD in a relevant field, including data science, civil engineering, transport engineering, spatial economics and geography
• You have good knowledge and experience in data-collection methods and data-analysis, (spatial) data science and geo-visualization techniques
• You have a record of scholarly productivity
• You have a proven capability in attracting external research funding
• You have good teaching skills, willingness to take the UTQ
• You have good coaching skills (BSc, MSc and PhD students)
• You have good communication skills
• You are a team player

You will initially be employed for a period of 2 years, with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities. Gross monthly salary is between € 3.111,- and € 4.757,- depending on your experience and qualifications.
