Job description

Our student population is growing rapidly, and the faculty’s ambition is to pursue further growth. Our academic disciplines are in an excellent position to take on today’s social challenges, in collaboration with other disciplines and social partners.

We provide substantial contributions to the research priorities of Robotics, Personalized Health Technology, Digital Society, Sensors & Sensing. The faculty comprises the departments Electical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science and includes five Bachelor’s programs and eight Master’s programs (all taught in English).

You will guide your team, together with the other faculty board members, in order to meet the following challenges successfully:

  • develop the faculty's strategy and directing efforts to achieve its realization;
  • facilitate growth and the ability to acquire external funding and attract self-funded students from both the Netherlands and abroad;
  • renew strategic human resources management and encourage talent development within the faculty and conform to university-wide initiatives;
  • position the faculty within the university and enthusiastically seek opportunities for joint initiatives with other faculties and research groups, in the university and beyond, in line with social developments. You will catalyze synergy between the various research themes to intensify existing (inter)national partnerships;
  • streamline educational organization (regarding educational support and improvement of educational processes involving, for example, admission and quality control);

As our new Dean you will:

  • have a vision regarding the future profile of the faculty and its individual disciplines. You will foster our development oriented mindset, as well as inspire and respond to modernization and innovation in a specific scientific area;
  • give the faculty a clear image, both within the university and beyond. Act enthusiastically within regional, national and international networks. Develop new partnerships and show leadership regarding external developments.
  • be the academic leader in our faculty and – both as an individual and as a scientist with a clear engineering affiliation – exercise authority within one of the Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science disciplines or related fields;
  • be able to implement changes and to get people on board using inspirational approaches. Dare to make choices, via your entrepreneurial and groundbreaking spirit;
  • have an amicable, unifying leadership style and communicate clearly and effectively;
  • participate with dedication and constructiveness with regards to the governing of the university, and take a balanced position at the intersection of different interests, which includes drawing distinctions between short-term and long-term interests.

Given the challenges mentioned above, the role is professional, managerial and administrative in nature and requires you to be familiar with the Dutch system of scientific education and research. The requisite and outlined profile allows some scope for the continuation of a research line, subject to further discussion.

The Dutch law for public sector salaries, WNT (Wet Normering Topinkomens) is applicable to this position.

Organization The Executive Board governs and leads the university. It has three members: a president, a vice-president and the rector magnificus. The board is supported by the university’s executive secretary. Following a change to the organizational model, that will be implemented on 1 January 2018, education (bachelor’s and master’s programs) and research will fall under the following five faculties: •Behavioral, Management and Social Studies; •Engineering Technology; •Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science; •Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation; •Science and Technology. The university also offers a liberal arts bachelor’s program, with honors, via the University College Twente and postgraduate programs via the Twente Graduate School. The faculties are governed by a Faculty Board with a Dean (in the role of President) and the various members in charge of education, research, and organization and management. The board is a collegiate body whose members share final responsibility of all powers and tasks. The participatory body at university level is the University Council. Its counterparts at faculty level are the Faculty Council and the education program committees. The Student Union is the umbrella body for students and student organizations at the university.
