Job description

Are you passionate about high-end technological design? Do you want to continue developing your skills with a combination of education and work?
Then, the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy and Process Technology is very interesting for you. The PDEng programme is a 2-year post-MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University of Twente, and a design project that will be carried out in cooperation with the HoSt company and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project.

The project – Numerical modelling of anaerobic digestion
The objective of the research is to develop a novel anaerobic digestion installation for biogas production. The biogas yield depends substantially on the substrates composition, sludge loading rate and control over the organic matter break down. A good mixing between substrates (wet manure, organic material, biogas bubbles, solids and bacteria) must be achieved to increase the speed and level of biomass conversion process. The biogas generation in function of flow, feed content and turbulence regimes will be investigated by application of CFD numerical tools (OpenFOAM and/or Ansys-Fluent). Numerical results will be validated with available literature data and experiments performed at facilities of project partners. Prediction and designing of an optimal operating conditions for biogas yield is the main target of the project.

Activities:

  • Development of numerical model for biogas production
  • Validation of the model with laboratory/full scale experiments on anaerobic digesters
  • Design of operating window and flow parameters for an optimized biogas yield
  • Redesign of the anaerobic digester geometry if necessary
