Job description

The successful candidate will  teach graduate and undergraduate courses in at least several of the following areas: political anthropology/anthropology of the state and citizenship, the anthropology of globalization, the anthropology of sustainability, ethnographic research methods, engaged/applied anthropology.

The position also requires supervision of Bachelor, Master and Ph-D students. We teach a three-year bachelor program in Cultural Anthropology: one-year master program in Cultural Anthropology; Sustainable Citizenship (Scim) and two-year research master program Cultural Anthropology; Sociocultural Transformations (Castor).

The associate professor will contribute to the departmental research program Sovereignty and Social Contestation in Complex Societies. Applicants must have an excellent publication record, a proven ability to acquire external research funds, and a strong commitment to teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the one-year master program Cultural Anthropology: Sustainable Citizenship.

The tenured position will be at the level of Associate Professor (Universitair Hoofd Docent – UHD). Depending on the qualifications and experience of the most suitable candidate, appointment at the level of Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent – UD) can be considered.

Requirements

We seek candidates with a proven reputation in research and teaching in political anthropology, including issues such as sovereignty, institutions, governance, social mobilization and citizenship. Preferably we are looking for candidates with solid expertise on sustainability and citizenship, governance of natural resources, and engaged anthropology. The successful candidate will contribute to the departmental research program Sovereignty and Social Contestation. The geographic area of expertise is open.

Requirements:

  • A Ph-D in cultural anthropology or a closely related field.
  • An excellent publication record.
  • A proven ability to acquire external research funds.
  • Demonstrable teaching skills.
  • Experience with Ph.D. supervision.
  • Candidates with no knowledge of Dutch will be expected, following language training, to have a functional level of competence within two years of taking up the appointment.
  • You have obtained Senior Teaching Qualification (at Utrecht University or equivalent) or are willing to achieve this qualification in the near future.

Conditions of employment

The gross salary ranges between € 4.815 and € 6.438 (scale 13/14 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time position. In case the appointment is at the level of assistant professor the gross salary ranges between € 3.475 and € 5.405 (scale 11/12) per month for a full-time position.

In addition, we offer attractive and flexible secondary terms of employment such as an annual holiday pay of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year and partially paid parental leave.
