Job description

Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) has a vacancy for a tenure track position (Assistant Professor) in Microeconomics. Candidates will be appointed for a period of six years, conditionally on a positive mid-term evaluation in the third year of employment. On the basis of a positive final evaluation at the end of the fifth year, candidates will be granted tenure and be promoted to associate professor after six years. The position offers ample opportunities to do research as it carries a reduced teaching load in the first three years. Teaching is done in English.

Requirements

You, as a successful candidate, are expected to have a thorough knowledge of Microeconomics, more particularly:

  • hold a doctorate in economics or a related discipline;
  • have a track record in research, demonstrated among others by publications in international peer-reviewed journals or books edited by internationally recognized publishers or alternatively, you have shown research potential evidenced by R&R invitations in good journals;
  • are interested in and have (proven) experience with a multidisciplinary approach in research in the field of microeconomics (theoretical, behavioural, experimental);
  • have knowledge of and experience with different types of social science research methods;
  • have prior teaching experience in an international environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels (and preferably postgraduate levels), apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;
  • have excellent communication and coordination skills;
  • have excellent command of spoken and written English. 

It is an advantage if you have a broad interest in and affinity with the research topics in our group.

Conditions of employment

U.S.E. offers a temporary appointment in an international working environment for two years, part-time or full-time. The salary ranges from € 3,475 to € 4,757 gross per month (scale 11 for a 1.0 FTE appointment), excluding holiday and end-of-year allowance.

In its research and teaching, U.S.E. crosses disciplinary borders by collaborating actively with the faculties of Law, Geography and Social Sciences and by participating in the university’s broad research themes, particularly Institutions and Sustainability.

You will become a member of the Economics section. Within this section world class research focuses on understanding inequality, unemployment and digitalization, as well as environmental sustainability, wealth creation and innovation. Microeconomic research focuses on understanding (individual, firm, market) behaviour as a consequence of monetary and non-monetary incentives, taking into account the interdependence with formal and informal institutions. Topics include sustainable decision making of consumers and firms, behavioural insights and economic policy, social and economic networks, collective action, choice under complexity, confidence and competitiveness, communication, cheap-talk and truth-telling. Methodological approaches involve (behavioural) game theory, and experimental studies in the lab, online and in the field.

U.S.E. maintains an excellent international network of academic relationships and is continuously working on extending this network. The curricula is taught fully in English.
