The Faculty of Humanities has a vacancy for an Assistant professor in New Media and Digital Culture .

The ideal candidate would have considerable knowledge of the study of New Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital methods and critical internet culture. He or she will also have demonstrable affinity with the areas of media arts, media history, media theory and social media critique. Up-to-date Internet skills are essential, as is current knowledge of digital culture as evidenced by active participation in online culture. Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms (e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube) and web-based applications (e.g., wikis) is highly desirable.

The new media and digital culture team is part of the Media Studies department and concerns itself with research strategies for the critical study of Internet culture. The Assistant professor will teach on both the bachelor's and master's degree levels, in courses concerned with such topics as data journalism, media theory, new media practice, new media research methods, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture. The Assistant professor may also teach more general courses in Media Studies on BA level. Candidates also must have a research agenda in new media and digital culture.

The candidate will also play a role in curriculum development in the Media Studies programs (especially the master program in New Media & Digital Culture). Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be active internationally in the field of new media (as evidenced through new media conference attendance and invited talks in the field), and liaise and work with academics and practitioners across the broad terrain of digital culture.

• Relevant PhD degree, or PhD defense date scheduled before start of contract;
• deft use of software for data analysis;
• capacity to work in multi-disciplinary teams of information designers, programmers and new media analysts, evidenced by e.g. leading a project at a Digital Methods Summer or Winter School;
• excellent research skills, evidenced by publications in renowned international academic journals and other relevant outlets;
• several years of teaching experience at the university level, on BA and MA level in more than one programme of study in the humanities;
• demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, evidenced by an educational portfolio;
• experience in an academic position where research and teaching are combined;
• experience in working in digital learning environments;
• immediately employable in teaching New Media subjects at all levels and willingness to teach in at least one other programme in the humanities within one year;
• organisational experience and skills;
• reliable team worker;
• thorough knowledge of Dutch and English; non-native Dutch speakers are requested to achieve competency in Dutch within two years.

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 1 January 2018 untill 31 July 2020, for 32 to 38 hours a week. The gross monthly salary will range from €3,475 (scale 11) to €5,405 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week). The Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities is applicable.
