Job description

The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral researcher in VIDI project on media coverage on the economy.

The postdoctoral researcher will participate in the project that runs until August 2019. First, a three-wave panel survey among the Dutch population has already been conducted, as well as a large-scale content analysis of media coverage. These data can be used to answer questions relating to the effects of media content on economic and political perceptions and behaviour. Second, a cross-national content analysis of newspapers and parliamentary questions is underway. The postdoc will participate in data collection, preparation and analysis for this part of the project.

 

Tasks
  • Analyse collected survey and content analytical data;
  • collect and analyse data for the cross-national comparison of newspaper coverage and political attention;
  • contribute to scientific publications;
  • contribute to publications for a broad audience;
  • work together with the PI, postdoc and PhD candidate that already work on the project.

Requirements

The project lasts until August 2019. Candidates for this position should have considerable academic experience at the PhD-level in working with quantitative survey data, as well as experience with manual and computer-assisted content analysis.

In addition, a successful candidate should have:

  • a PhD degree in communication or related science;
  • knowledge and experience with survey research, content analysis and advanced data analysis;
  • knowledge about communication science theories;
  • outstanding organizational skills;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Conditions of employment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 20 months (January 2018-September 2019). Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €3,475 to €4,757 (scale 11) depending on expertise and previous experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. The Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities is applicable.

The VIDI project of prof. Vliegenthart, funded by the Dutch science foundation NWO, focuses on the media coverage of the economy, and its effects on both public opinion as well as political decision-making. The project is hosted at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). ASCoR is the research institute in communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. It is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and is among the largest worldwide. More than 50 senior researchers are permanently associated with ASCoR, and its English-language PhD program has more than 40 students.
