The Amsterdam Cosmology Group (ACG), part of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) at the University of Amsterdam, invites applications for a PhD position starting in the Fall of 2018. The position will be under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Baumann.
The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to work on a wide range of topics in theoretical cosmology. The details of the PhD project will be determined in discussion with Prof. Baumann.
An MSc. in Physics or an equivalent degree is required to be considered for this position. The candidate needs to possess excellent written and oral English communication skills.
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). With over 5,000 employees, 30,000 students and a budget of more than 600 million euros, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an intellectual hub within the Netherlands. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted within seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad.
The UvA’s students and employees are independent thinkers, competent rebels who dare to question dogmas and aren’t satisfied with easy answers and standard solutions. To work at the UvA is to work in an independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterised by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society.
The Amsterdam Cosmology Group (ACG) is part of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) at the University of Amsterdam. The ACG currently consists of four faculty members (Daniel Baumann, Ben Freivogel, Marieke Postma, Jan-Pieter van der Schaar), six postdoctoral researchers and nine PhD candidates. The members of our group are interested in a wide range of topics in theoretical cosmology ranging from the dynamics of the early universe to the formation of large-scale structures in the late universe. The successful applicants would be embedded in a vibrant research environment at the IoP, which includes very active groups in high-energy physics (ITFA) and astroparticle physics (GRAPPA).
